Lonney Dickinson, a county employee working for the Waste Water department in Lorton, was honored by County Chairman Sharon Bulova for his winning entry to a contest created to find ways to save the county money.

Dickinson's idea for an "Online Surplus Store" where County agencies and local non-profits could purchase discounted supplies no longer being used by the County, won him a $500 prize- as well as $5,000 from his union--the Fairfax County Government Employees Union (FCGEU)--in "seed money" for the county to get the idea started.

FCGEU President Karen Conchar, also an employee with the County, spoke about the value that county employees can bring to table when it comes to cost cutting ideas. "We want to be a voice for the public, because as government employees want to be able to deliver the best public services that we can. And when we figure out a way to do it better or ways to save money- we want to make sure that those ideas are taken seriously and have a path to be implemented."
